Franciszek Starowieyski (1930-2009)

BIOGRAPHIE: 

Franciszek Starowieyski,  est un artiste polonais.

Il étudie aux Beaux-Arts de Cracovie puis de Varsovie.

Peintre, dessinateur, scénographe et illustrateur, il s’agit d’un artiste protéiforme.

Au début de sa carrière , il s’inscrit dans le réalisme socialiste, puis évolue vers l’école polonaise du « cyrk poster », et ancre sa démarche dans la tradition polonaise de l’affiche, élevée au rang d’art.

L’oeuvre de Franciszek Starowieyski bénéficie d’une renommée internationale.

Son travail a été récompensé par le Grand Prix de la biennale d’art contemporain de São Paulo en 1973, et primé à la biennale internationale de l’affiche de Varsovie et au festival international de cinéma de Chicago en 1979 et 1982.

Il est par ailleurs le premier artiste polonais à avoir fait l’objet d’une rétrospective au MoMA en 1986.

Franciszek Starowieyski is a Polish artist.

He studied at the Fine Arts in Krakow and then in Warsaw.

Painter, designer, scenographer and illustrator, he is a protean artist.

At the beginning of his career, he was part of socialist realism, then evolved towards the Polish school of the “cyrk poster”, and anchored his approach in the Polish tradition of the poster, elevated to the rank of art.

The work of Franciszek Starowieyski enjoys international fame.

His work was awarded the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Contemporary Art Biennial in 1973, and won prizes at the Warsaw International Poster Biennial and the Chicago International Film Festival in 1979 and 1982.

He is also the first Polish artist to be the subject of a retrospective at MoMA in 1986.
