Slavko Kopac est né le 21 août 1913 à Vinkovci en Croatie.

En 1937, il obtient son diplôme à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Zagreb où, dès 1938, il commence à exposer.

En 1939, il vient à Paris en tant que boursier du gouvernement français, y reste jusqu’en 1940.

Il retourne en Croatie et exerce la profession de professeur de dessin.

En 1943, il fait un voyage d’étude en Italie et se fixe à Florence où il reste jusqu’en 1948, participant à plusieurs expositions personnelles ou collectives

En 1948, il se fixe définitivement à Paris où il rencontre très vite Jean Dubuffet avec qui il collabore quotidiennement pour la création du premier Musée de l’Art Brut dont il restera directeur jusqu’en 1975.

Il poursuit en même temps son activité de peintre, sculpteur, céramiste comme en témoignent de nombreuses expositions.

Il meurt en 1995.

Slavko Kopac was born on August 21, 1913 in Vinkovci, Croatia.

In 1937, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb where, in 1938, he began exhibiting.

In 1939, he came to Paris as a scholarship holder from the French government, remaining there until 1940.

He returned to Croatia and worked as a drawing teacher.

In 1943, he made a study trip to Italy and settled in Florence where he remained until 1948, participating in several personal or group exhibitions.

In 1948, he settled permanently in Paris where he quickly met Jean Dubuffet with whom he collaborated daily for the creation of the first Musée de l'Art Brut of which he remained director until 1975.

At the same time, he continues his activity as a painter, sculptor and ceramist, as evidenced by numerous exhibitions.

He died in 1995.
