Comme nombre de peintres américains de sa génération, Francis Morton-Johnson (1878-1931) a quitté son Massachusetts natal pour parfaire sa formation artistique à Paris. Il y intègre l’académie Julian, où il suit l’enseignement de Jean-Paul Laurens. Débutant au Salon d’automne en 1907, il se joint à celui des indépendants l’année suivante, ce qui lui vaut l’acquisition d’une nature morte par l’État. Il sera fidèle à cette manifestation qui lui a porté chance jusqu’à la veille de la Première Guerre mondiale
Like many American painters of his generation, Francis Morton-Johnson (1878-1931) left his
native Massachusetts to perfect his artistic training in Paris. He enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. He made his debut at the Salon d'Automne in 1907 and joined the Salon des Indépendants the following year, which led to the acquisition of one of his still lifes by the French government. He remained loyal to this exhibition, which brought him good fortune, until the eve of World War I. His post-Impressionist style.
